Usually a cloudy day is not ideal for a tour – but for our Fall Photography Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the cloudy weather could not have been better. The light during the tour two Saturdays ago was diffused by the clouds, which made for an evenly-lit and crisp batch of photos. And the clouds themselves… fuggetaboutit!
As outlined in our previous photo blogpost, Brooklyn Navy Yard photographer Davina Zagury Feinberg will be choosing her three favorites from this autumn bunch. Will she choose the textured architectural backdrops of the old Naval Hospital? Or the photos with clean red-brick or grey-sky background? Is it even possible for her to resist choosing the portrait of our omnipresent guard cat captured in the shadows of the Surgeon’s House? Davina’s body of work seems to favor portraiture, but the beautiful and somewhat surreal landscapes in the Yard will be hard to resist. And there was a tug boat in Dry Dock 1 during this tour – will the masterfully balanced, black and white shot of the laid up tug make the cut? Stay tuned to find out!
Turnstile Tours offers the Seasonal Photography Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard four times throughout the year. The first tour of the 2o14 season will be Saturday, January 18 at 11am. Get more information here, and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. We also offer our Overview Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard every Saturday and Sunday 2-4pm, and other special themed tours of The Yard. All tours are offered in partnership with and begin at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, which offers free admission to three floors of exhibitions on the yard’s past and present, the Ted & Honey rooftop cafe, and a host of great special events and programs.
