Woolworth Building & Brooklyn Army Terminal Tour

Explore two of renowned architect Cass Gilbert’s most remarkable buildings on this 3-hour experience stretching from Lower Manhattan to the South Brooklyn Waterfront. The tour begins at the stunning Woolworth Building, where an expert Woolworth Tours guide will walk you through the sumptuous and magnificent elements of what was once the world’s tallest building. From the ornate façade and soaring mosaic ceiling, to the intricate stained glass and amusing corbel characters, you will learn the history of this building brought to life through its remarkable detail. We will then walk through the Financial District, stopping by another Gilbert building and other Manhattan landmarks including St. Paul’s Chapel, Trinity Church, Wall Street, and Federal Hall.

Once you arrive at Pier 11, we will then board the NYC Ferry (one-way ticket included) to Sunset Park, taking in great views of New York Harbor and the South Brooklyn waterfront. We will then disembark at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, an engineering marvel that is today a center of manufacturing and innovation. Although also designed by Cass Gilbert, it is radically different from the Woolworth Building in appearance, design, and function. Built in 1918-1919, it served as a supply base for the American military for nearly 50 years, and today it is home to over 100 companies in industries ranging from precision manufacturers to biotech researchers, online retailers to chocolatiers. On this walking exploration of the site, you will learn how Gilbert designed and built the world’s largest concrete structure, longer on the ground than the Woolworth is tall. You will closely examine its architecture and infrastructure, step inside unrestored areas of the complex, and walk through the Terminal’s architectural gem – the breathtaking atrium of Building B, where freight trains once rumbled through to be loaded from the innovative, cantilevered balconies.
