This image shows workers headed for the Cumberland Gate at the end of a shift in 1941. Before the United States entered World War II, approximately 25,000 people worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. By 1944, the workforce would grow to over 70,000. On the right, you can see Building 128, the former Engine Machine Shop, now home to technology accelerator Newlab. On the left is the Foundry, replaced in 1942 by Building 280, the Ordnance Machine Shop, where you can visit painter Naomi Katz Plotkin, artist Nick Golebiewski Studio, and designer Tunji Dada.
