Building 20 was built in the 1860s as the Iron Plating shop, as the Yard underwent a huge technological transition, building ships out of iron instead of wood. The building previously had a tall, ornate smokestack for its coal-fired steam engine, and on its roof was a bell that announced the beginning and end of each workday. Today, this building is home to Nanotronics, a company that builds equipment used to detect flaws in the manufacturing of electronics and other precision equipment.
