AARP, July 27, 2025

by Kristen Pope

From 1801 to 1966, the Brooklyn Navy Yard served as a shipbuilding and repair facility. During World War II, more than 70,000 people worked at the yard. Today, it is owned by New York City and is home to more than 550 businesses. Turnstile Tours’ walking tour covers approximately 2 miles and includes a dry dock from 1851 that is still in use and a building that was once the Marine Commandant’s residence, and the tour shares oral histories of many workers, including women. Turnstile Tours also offers other tours of the yard with special themes such as Architecture & Infrastructure and World War II.
