The submissions are in from our Spring Photography Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. As you can see below, the photographers captured a diversity of spaces, from the sealed-up structures of the Naval Hospital, to the workings of the active waterfront facilities, to the repurposed 19th-century industrial buildings that dot the yard. Some chose to focus on small details (much like our judge and BLDG 92 Visiting Artist Theresa Fitzgerald), while others captured sweeping views of Wallabout Bay and the hospital campus. For many, color was a common theme – either filling the frame with bold colors, or capturing dabs of yellows and reds that jump from the image. On the day of the tour, we lucked out with absolutely gorgeous light at midday, which you can see captured here.

We will be announcing the three winners of the Spring Photography Contest, as selected by Theresa Fitzgerald and Doug Keljikian (who both joined us for the tour), next week. The selected photographers will receive two free tickets on any Brooklyn Navy Yard Tour, and they will be entered into the year-end finale, where they’ll be eligible to win a free private tour of the Yard for up to 30 people.
Don’t miss our next photo tour, which will take place Saturday, July 26 at 5pm – a great opportunity to capture to Yard in long evening shadows. If you want to get a different angle on the Brooklyn Navy Yard, you can also sign up for our Fleet Week Tours, taking place May 22–26, which will spend some time exploring the Yard, as well as many other spots around the harbor (including Staten Island’s Stapleton Pier, where Navy and Coast Guard vessels will be berthed) by boat.
Turnstile Tours offers the Seasonal Photography Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard four times throughout the year. The next tour of the 2014 season will be Saturday, July 26 at 5pm. Get more information here, and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. We also offer our Past, Present & Future Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard every Saturday and Sunday 2:30-4:30pm, and other special themed tours of the Yard. All tours are offered in partnership with and begin at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, which offers free admission to three floors of exhibitions on the yard’s past and present, the Ted & Honey rooftop cafe, and a host of great special events and programs.
