Each season, we offer a special opportunity for photographers to explore the Brooklyn Navy Yard with us. Our next Seasonal Photography Tour is taking place this Saturday, October 10 at 11am, departing from BLDG 92.
For this special tour, we’ll be exploring the industrial and maritime features of the waterfront at the Yard, including close-up views of the many ships that are currently berthed at the Yard awaiting repairs, a pier that will soon be redeveloped for new construction, and the landmark 1851 dry dock. Unlike previous tours, we will not be visiting the Naval Hospital Campus, though you can still step inside the 1838 building until October 24 as part of a special art exhibition there following the tour.
We’re pleased to announce that our featured judge for Saturday’s tour will be John Bartelstone, a photographer who spent 15 years (1994-2009) capturing the spirit of the industrial park in images, culminating in his published collection The Brooklyn Navy Yard – some excerpts from this beautiful volume are included below. As with all of our photo tours, visitors will be invited to submit their best shots to a contest for a chance to win free public tour tickets – and the opportunity to be featured in a year-end exhibition at BLDG 92.
With such a depth of experience photographing the site, John admits that has his own particular views on photographing the Yard. “I’m kind of opinionated when it comes to the Yard and industrial images,” he admitted to us over email. “One thing that makes selection easy is that I will throw out any image that smacks of HDR. You know, the ones with muddy skies, bright shadows and charcoal smudges all over.”
So, photographers be warned.
Turnstile Tours offers the Seasonal Photography Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard four times throughout the year. The final tour of the 2015 season will be Saturday, October 10 at 11am. Get tickets & information here, and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. We also offer our Past, Present & Future Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard every weekend at 2pm, and other special themed tours of the Yard. All tours are offered in partnership with and begin at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, which offers free admission to three floors of exhibitions on the Yard’s past and present and a host of great special events and programs.
