Today we joined our friends @brooklynbotanic for a Today we joined our friends @brooklynbotanic for a flower “ribbon-cutting” of their elevated planting beds in the Children’s Garden that are designed to make gardening programs more accessible to visitors! Congratulations to the many people who contributed time, talent, and resources to make this project possible! This was a team effort that involved vision and leadership from BBG’s staff, landscape architecture design by Future Free and guidance from BBG’s Best Practices Working Group, an incredible group of disability advocates and accessibility advisors that we have had the pleasure to learn from and work with over the past four years. So excited to see these raised beds being used for school programs, children’s gardening programs, memory programs and more! Teamwork makes the dream work!

We had a great time this week with our friends fro We had a great time this week with our friends from @savemaxovanka in Millvale, PA, who “Painted the Town Vanka” for their big fundraiser. The murals inside St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church by Croatian immigrant artist Maxo Vanka were called his “Gift to America,” and @vankagift2.o engages artists to create works that draw inspiration from the murals, like @cbperry_’s beautiful work here. Some of the most stunning works are the four figures of Justice, Injustice, Prudence, and Mati (Mother Croatia), which educators and supporters portrayed in costume. Cindy was definitely shocked by Injustice! The organization works to preserve and interpret these unique and delicate murals—definitely pay them a visit if you’re ever in Pittsburgh.

In January 1945, convoys carrying thousands of Ame In January 1945, convoys carrying thousands of American troops back home for 30-day furloughs began arriving in New York Harbor. Most soldiers had never had the chance to go home once they were shipped off, but after three years of war, and one of the coldest European winters in recorded history (punctuated by the Battle of the Bulge), a select few were given a monthlong reprieve, as were counterparts in the Pacific Theater. Most soldiers initially refused the offer, and went only on the condition that they be allowed to return to the fight with their same units. And like today, those soldiers arrived at a snow-covered @brooklynarmyterminal to begin their furloughs—join us for a tour at 2pm (Sun 1/30), and on select Saturdays throughout the winter.

We got some great food at the food trucks in Long We got some great food at the food trucks in Long Wharf in New Haven. The city doesn’t have a perfect vending system, but they recognize the value of vendors. New Haven has set up special vending districts, and this one has power pylons that allow food trucks to operate without idling or running gas generators. We got food from Ixtapa and Sweeney’s tacos, and New Haven is not immune to the explosive popularity of birria tacos.

We had an awesome day at the @momocrawl in Jackson We had an awesome day at the @momocrawl in Jackson Heights today. We loved eating momos and meeting people from the Nepalese and Tibetan communities in Queens, but no one enjoyed it more than Salty, who got more than her fair share of momos. Congratulations to @bhanchhaghar, which captured the momo championship belt for the fourth consecutive year! Their goat and buffalo momos were absolutely amazing. That belt is made from authentic Himalayan yak hide, and it has a piece of the peak of Mount Everest on it! Congrats as well to all the organizers, especially @queensqustodian, for pulling off this event after last year’s hiatus.

Happy 246th birthday to the @marines! Marines were Happy 246th birthday to the @marines! Marines were an integral part of the @bklynnavyyard for most of its history. They were stationed at the Yard from 1810 until 1975, and during much of that time, their barracks and parade ground were located along Flushing Avenue where Building 77 stands today. The Yard’s museum at BLDG 92 is the only extant part of the Marine complex, built in 1857 by the @uscapitol architect Thomas U. Walter. Marines guarded the gates of the Yard for over 150 years, and before the branch evolved into the expeditionary and amphibious forces they are today, their primary role was to protect shore installations, provide security on board ships (including enforcing discipline and preventing mutinies) and conduct landing and boarding operations.
