Today is #medalofhonorday, and the @bklynnavyyard Today is #medalofhonorday, and the @bklynnavyyard offers an interesting insight into how this award has changed over time. Created during the Civil War, first for the Navy to those who “distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action and other seaman-like qualities during the present war,” it was commonly awarded during peacetime before World War II. Though many sailors and Marines dispatched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard or serving on Yard-built ships have received the Medal of Honor, six did for acts of bravery actually at the Yard. All of these were for … swimming; specifically, rescuing shipmates who had fallen overboard in the relatively tranquil waters of Wallabout Bay. This was an uncommon skill back then, and certainly heroic, but would not meet the standards for the award today. The recipients were John Taylor (1865, Yard picket boat); Charles Gidding, Charles Richards, and William Corey (1876, USS Plymouth, same incident); and Robert Sweeney and J.A. Norris (1883, USS Jamestown, same incident).

#OTD in 1835, the Great Fire broke out in New York #OTD in 1835, the Great Fire broke out in New York, and recent immigrant from Italy Nicolino Calyo captured scenes of the fire in a series of 22 paintings. Many, like this one, were done from Brooklyn. The fire destroyed 17 city blocks and nearly 700 buildings in Lower Manhattan. US Marines were dispatched from the @bklynnavyyard to blow up buildings with gunpowder (though the Yard had insufficient stores, the Marines rowed to Red Hook to get more) in an attempt to create a fire break, and this aided in abating the blaze. Learn more about NYC’s nineteenth-century history on a tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, every Saturday at 2pm. Link in bio.

We teamed up with @russanddaughters this sunny Sat We teamed up with @russanddaughters this sunny Saturday to explore the past and present of manufacturing at the @bklynnavyyard . Niki, 4th generation owner of Russ & Daughters, gave us exclusive access to the catwalk for a bird's eye view of their Brooklyn Navy Yard bakery. We watched from above as bagels were rolled and weighed, while @nikirussfederman shared stories about the beginnings of her family's business and their transition from LES to BNY. Upon our descent we were greeted with fresh rugelach (chocolate, cinnamon raisin, and raspberry)!

Afterwards, we looped through the BNY Museum at Building 92 and @dougchap introduced visitors to the various historic ships and many manufacturing businesses that have called the Yard home over the past 200 years. We strolled through the yard with an eye out for beeping trucks and tractors meandering the roads. The Navy Yard was also hosting a couple public events, including a tattoo fest (something the old sailors surely would have been psyched about) and the Quills Fest, a VR exhibition of the Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival @osfashland . Our last stop was historic Dry Dock 1, where we enjoyed a spectacular view of the East River and Williamsburg Bridge while Niki shared with us some behind-the-scenes trivia of TV shows filmed in the Navy Yard.

After getting our steps in, we returned to Building 77 and met with @transmitterbrewing who treated us to a brew of our choosing, each made on-site. The drinks paired perfectly with the babka, black & white cookies, and scallion cream cheese and lox bagels from Russ & Daughters. With a full view of Brooklyn's waterfront, and even fuller bellies, we were all ready to brace the rest of our unseasonably sunny Saturday.

Special thanks to our team member Carinn for this post!

Today we joined our friends @brooklynbotanic for a Today we joined our friends @brooklynbotanic for a flower “ribbon-cutting” of their elevated planting beds in the Children’s Garden that are designed to make gardening programs more accessible to visitors! Congratulations to the many people who contributed time, talent, and resources to make this project possible! This was a team effort that involved vision and leadership from BBG’s staff, landscape architecture design by Future Free and guidance from BBG’s Best Practices Working Group, an incredible group of disability advocates and accessibility advisors that we have had the pleasure to learn from and work with over the past four years. So excited to see these raised beds being used for school programs, children’s gardening programs, memory programs and more! Teamwork makes the dream work!

We had a great time this week with our friends fro We had a great time this week with our friends from @savemaxovanka in Millvale, PA, who “Painted the Town Vanka” for their big fundraiser. The murals inside St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church by Croatian immigrant artist Maxo Vanka were called his “Gift to America,” and @vankagift2.o engages artists to create works that draw inspiration from the murals, like @cbperry_’s beautiful work here. Some of the most stunning works are the four figures of Justice, Injustice, Prudence, and Mati (Mother Croatia), which educators and supporters portrayed in costume. Cindy was definitely shocked by Injustice! The organization works to preserve and interpret these unique and delicate murals—definitely pay them a visit if you’re ever in Pittsburgh.
